Second Sky is delighted to announce that commissioning editor Sophie Judge has snapped up two new fantasy series in her first acquisitions for the imprint. Second Sky, which launched in spring 2023, recently saw its first no.1 New York Times bestseller with Enchantra by Kaylie Smith, and is continuing to expand its publishing across romantasy, urban fantasy, cosy fantasy, space opera and witchy rom-coms.
Dragons, Heists and Other Retirement Plans by debut author Meg Pennerson is The Thursday Murder Club meets Legends and Lattes: a cozy, heist-y fantasy about two elderly partners-in-crime who are forced to come back out of retirement for one last caper, accompanied by their beloved cats and dragons. Book 1 will publish in March 2026, and book 2 will follow in August 2026. World All Languages rights, including audio, were acquired from Caitlin Blasdell at Liza Dawson Associates.
Heart of the Wolf Queen by debut author Sarah Gallego is a spicy, second-chance gothic romantasy about a visually impaired princess who is offered as a sacrifice to a vengeful god, then rescued by a distant king who demands her hand in marriage – only to reveal he’s the childhood friend who once broke her heart. Forced to marry him to survive, she begins to feel old emotions surface as they face eldritch creatures and magical warfare together. Book 1 will publish in March 2026, and book 2 will follow in July 2026. World All Languages rights, including audio, film and TV were acquired direct from the author.
Sophie says,
‘I am hugely proud to be working with Meg and Sarah to publish their debut series, and I’m so excited to introduce these books to readers of bookish cosy fantasy and swoon-worthy romantasy. Meg and Sarah’s stories are rich with such unique and lovingly created characters, who feel so real. It’s such a privilege to be bringing new subgenres of fantasy to Second Sky’s unique list, which combines expert digital publishing with traditional print opportunities.’
Meg says,
‘I am simply elated to have partnered with the brilliant team at Second Sky and particularly my editor, Sophie Judge, to bring the rompy escapades of two retired thieves to readers. Katherine and Imogene’s friendship as well as their cat and dragon companions are such a source of joy for me as I tell their stories, and I am so very pleased that their cosy adventures are in such enthusiastic and supportive hands!’
Sarah says,
‘I’m absolutely thrilled to announce that I’ll be publishing my debut epic romantasy with Second Sky. I’ve been overwhelmed by my talented editor Sophie’s passion and vision for Sorrow and Matthias. I cannot wait to share the Star-Crossed Gods duology with readers and I feel truly blessed to be part of such a fantastic team. These characters and their journey hold a cherished place in my heart and I couldn’t be more delighted with the home I’ve found for them.’
