Second Sky will publish two sizzling hot why-choose dark romantasy titles by S.E. Berkeley, author of A Game of Fallen Stars. Commissioning Editor Sophie Judge acquired World English Language rights, including audio, from Lauren Spieller and Hannah Teachout of Folio Literary Management. The first title will publish in June 2026.
Astoria cursed her own blood and shattered her Mage Order – fleeing her family and Valen, the ex-fiancé she still aches for. Now she hides in her black-market bookshop of living grimoires with her unfairly attractive business partner, Lucas, while the curse slowly devours her magic. When a shapeshifting spellbook breaks loose, Astoria is dragged back to Valen – and into a dangerous, irresistible choice between the two men she loves.
Perfect for fans of Jasmine Mas and Sadie Kincaid, this combines the dark seduction of the “why choose” trope in J Bree’s novels with Holly Black’s deadly, bookish magic.
Sopie Judge says,
‘I was hooked from the first page. The pacing is relentless, the chemistry between the characters is utterly scorching, and the deliciously dark, dust-choked bookshop – where the books are alive and out for blood – feels intoxicating. This is exactly the kind of addictive why-choose romantasy that keeps me up far too late, and the emotional payoff is as satisfying as the magic!’
S. E. Berkeley says,
‘I am absolutely thrilled to be partnering with Sophie Judge at Second Sky for my spicy and dark duology! From the moment I met Sophie, I knew my disaster trio had landed in good hands. My story was seen for what it was and what it could be. My characters were embraced for all their complex flaws, and Astoria wasn’t dulled down but honed to the sharp blade she is. I am so proud of what we’ve produced, and I cannot wait to share it with the world.’
Hannah Teachout says,
‘I’m thrilled that Berkeley’s books have found such an excellent home in Second Sky. Readers are going to eat up this delicious why-choose romance.’
